It is one of six Schools making up the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts with its 1,800-plus staff and around 11,500 degree and continuing education students.

The Competence Center Thermal Energy Storage (CCTES – www.hslu.ch/tes) focuses on energy storage technologies on a material and component level as well as on energy system analysis and optimization and is a leading research group with worldwide cooperations. We are an open-minded team of young scientists and entrepreneurs. We live a culture of inclusion and equal opportunities at all levels.

We are looking for highly motivated, result-oriented persons to join us, starting as soon as possible.

SNF PhD Position in Engineering Science (70%)

Ihre Aufgaben
In the Energy Strategy 2050, Switzerland has defined the transition of the energy system from fossil/ nuclear towards renewable energies. Seasonal thermal energy storages are a central element of the energy transition, which are affected by acceptance and related diffusion problems but have so far received much less public as well as scientific attention. This is the starting point of the SNF project Sociotechnological Breakthrough of Thermal Energy Storage (SOTES), in which we ask the overarching research question of how to achieve a breakthrough of seasonal thermal energy storage in the residential sector in Switzerland.

  • Research within the framework of a PhD thesis conducted as a PhD candidate enrolled into the doctoral school at a university (to be defined)
  • Engineering science position in close collaboration with social / political scientists
  • Invent new modular descriptions of seasonal thermal energy storages and to contribute to the design and optimization of storage models within energy system contexts
  • Provide storage component description for the constructive technology assessment framework
  • Documentation of methods and implementation
  • Discussion of research at conferences, publication of results in international scientific journals
  • Place of employment is Lucerne, but it is expected that the candidate is present at the PhD-granting university according to the requirements of doctoral courses and thesis supervision

Ihr Profil

  • Completed Master’s degree preferably in engineering or a related field
  • Specialization in energy (storage) technologies
  • Profound experience in systems modelling and technoeconomic assessment
  • Fluency in English required, German a plus
  • Project management, presentation skills, rapid familiarization with new topics
  • Creative, team-minded, communicative and eager for knowledge
  • Enthusiastic about energy topics, development of new ideas and tackling complex problems
