University Professor of PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY

The University of Innsbruck invites applications for the position of

University Professor of Physical geography

at the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Geo- and Atmospheric Sciences.

It is a position in accordance with § 98 of the Austrian Universities’ Act (Universitätsgesetz – UG) and will be based on a civil-law employment contract with the University on the basis of the Salaried Employees Act (Angestelltengesetz). The contract will be concluded for an unlimited period; the extent of employment is 100%.

Responsibilities include

The chair-holder is to represent the field of “Physical Geography” both in research and teaching.

The research focus should be on geomorphic dynamics applying innovative system- and data-based theories and methods for geodata acquisition, analyses, and modelling in mountain areas. Therefore, the candidate should have expertise in two or more of the following: monitoring, analysis (including remote sensing techniques); and (numerical) modelling of processes; each of these fields should consider multi- and trans-scalar approaches; as well as in potential future process changes due to climate change and human activities; or the development and integration of new methods of data acquisition and analysis. The profile of the Department of Geography in Physical Geography is to be complemented and strengthened by means of an inter- and transdisciplinary research approach.

The person to be appointed is expected to become actively involved in the university\’s research area ‘Mountain Regions’ and the research center ’Global Change – Regional Sustainability’ as well as the relevant Innsbruck doctoral colleges. Collaboration in further research areas or research centers of the university will be welcomed. Commitment to inter-university sustainability initiatives (e.g. for the university networks ‘Aurora’ and/or ‘UniNEtZ’) is of great importance.

In teaching, participation is expected in the modules of the Bachelor\’s and Master\’s programs in Geography as well as Geography and Economics (teaching profession) and the PhD-program in Geography, including the supervision of corresponding theses.

An integral part of this professorship is dedicated collegial participation in academic administration and self-governance.

Employment Requirements include

  1. a PhD degree in Austria or the equivalent abroad, pertinent to the position in Physical Geography, preferably geomorphology;
  2. proven experience of quantitative geomorphic research in mountain areas;
  3. proven record in applying innovative and multi-/trans-scalar range of methods for geodata acquisition and analysis (incl. remote sensing techniques) or for modelling of geomorphic dynamic processes;
  4. strong publication record in leading international peer-reviewed journals;
  5. participation in international research consortia;
  6. relevant international working experience;
  7. experience in acquiring and managing external research funds;
  8. subject-related habilitation or comparable qualification;
  9. strong teaching skills and high commitment to teaching;
  10. the ability to teach courses in German and English, or, if necessary, the willingness to learn the German language for use in the university environment.

  12. strong interpersonal skills, teamwork skills, and collegiality.
